This past month I joined forces with the wonderfully (equally) judgmental ladies of the YAckers Book Club. Each month we select a book to pick apart, which I suppose is likely to make the bulk of us feel all the feels to the nth degree.
In Februrary we chose to read Paper Valentine by Brenna Yovanoff, and the resulting MEH can be heard echoing throughout the blogosphere. You know those books that totally suck you in while reading, but then you sit back and think…hmm…that didn’t really work, did it? Such was my reaction to Paper Valentine. Quite frankly, I’m too lazy to put my usual time and effort into writing a review for a book I so absolutely nothing, so feel free to immerse yourself in the ranty spoilers of our Yack Attack. Or, just stop by to see our new feature: Who Would Richard Armitage Play? Because while this book may or may not be worth your time, topless Richard Armitage always deserves a pause and stare. If you’ve read Paper Valentine, please let me know, just what was Yovanoff thinking when she decided to cram 50 square pegs into one round hole?
In addition to the YAcky goodness, I’ve also been participating in two read alongs with other lovelies. We’ve been talking The Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta with Hannah over at So Obsessed With, where you can see Weeks 1, 2, and 3 of our progress through Finnikin of the Rock. Feel free to chime in if you’ve read the book (but no spoilers or I will find you and cut you), and join to read along! We’re finishing Finnikin up this week and starting Froi next week.
And on a ‘my book is bigger than yours’ note, I’ve undertaken the reading of David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest with a lovely group of ladies, spurred on by Flannery of The Readventurer. Door stopper of door stoppers, this one is proving to be a fascinating challenge to all as we near the 1/4 mark going into our 3rd week of reading. More ambitious than the Infinite Summer crowd *puffs out chest*, we’re taking on 100 pages a week, and you can check out our collected observations about the first chunk here, and of course check back with The Readventurer each week to see us flail and attempt to be philosophical (okay…some in the group are really succeeding at the philosophy. I, on the other hand, am mostly succeeding in enjoying the humor of the whole thing).
Please accept my apologies for being away last week, I’m one of those who firmly feels if I’m on vacation, the blog is too, but I’m not going to advertise that ahead of time lest some creeper think ‘ah! she’s out of town, I shall break into her apartment and assault her cat’. I happen to like my cat, thank you very much. Vacation reading included Maureen Johnson’s The Madness Underneath and Jane Nickerson’s Strands of Bronze and Gold which debuts with creepy Gothic Bluebeard goodness. I also finally finished listening to the Jane Jameson series by Molly Harper, so there shall be talk of snarky vampire librarian goodness to come. Stay tuned tomorrow for my
review rant on book two of The Shades of London series! And happy Monday to all.
