I, like many of you I am sure, adore fall. I didn’t truly appreciate fall growing up. I lived in Wyoming where it went strait from hot to cold and the leaves on the trees were usually shocked strait from green to dead without that beautiful orange and red middle phase. Now that I live in New York, fall has become my favorite of seasons. It’s beautiful, the weather is gorgeous (and perfect to start busting out tights, boots, and scarves!), and the kids are back in school (it was a very long summer as a children’s bookseller).
The other thing about fall I’ve come to love in recent years is horror. More than ever I love some creep in my books, and as the season’s been moving on I’ve been simply craving it. So here are five books and five audiobooks I already own that I intend to scare the crap out of myself with this fall:
The only Stephen King I’ve ever read is The Dark Tower series. I loved it, but when I found this one in the bargain bin I knew it was time to try another (plus I love this throwback pulp fiction look it has going on).
Obviously if I’m trying more Stephen King, I should also sample some of his son’s writing. I’ve wanted to read NOS4A2 since it’s release–Christmas horror?! Okay…sure! Another bargain bin score.
I’ve been holding off reading Game knowing that it was just rife with cliff hangers, but it’s been sitting on my shelf taunting me since Barry Lyga visited my bookstore last fall. Can’t wait to finish this series!
Another book I purchased as soon as it released when Ransom Riggs came to my bookstore. Not really sure why I haven’t read this one yet other than the mood just hasn’t struck. I was really disappointed when the first turned out to be an unexpected series, but if that was the worst of it I should be quite happy with Hollow City.
Yep…I still haven’t actually read this one. SAD I KNOW. Every year I say I’m going to listen to the audio, and every year I forget to request it from the library before there’s a run on it. Well this year I thought ahead and checked it out early. I have read the first installment of the graphic novels, and will be reading the second upon it’s release in a week!
I can hardly believe that it’s been a year since I read a Seanan McGuire book…an absolute crime, especially since I’ve purchased the two most recent October Daye books and InCryptid books. BUT I also purchased Feed, the first in her series under pen name Mira Grant. I’ve really been into zombies this year what with The Girl With All the Gifts and the White Trash Zombie series, so let’s keep that ball rolling people!
Two years ago The Booksmugglers dared me to read Dark Matter by Michelle Paver. It was, and remains to this day, the creepiest book I’ve ever read. I loved it. I didn’t sleep for weeks. That same year, Ana took the challenge of reading the notoriously frightening The Haunting of Hill House. This year, I’m giving myself that challenge as the audio showed up as a Daily Deal and I couldn’t resist snagging it up.
Nope, this is a classic I’ve missed out on. I’ve been trying to read a few classics every year (just finished the awesome Three Musketeers), so this one’s next on the list! It has an outstanding cast with some of my favorite narrators–Simon Vance, Katherine Kellgren, Tim Curry, Steven Crossley, Alan Cumming, John Lee, and more.
I listened to the first three books in this series last year, but just now got around to picking up The Final Descent. I’m uncertain how it’s going to go–it’s significantly shorter than the other books in the series, and when I met Yancey he warned me there might be tears. Well, the fact of the matter is I don’t like anyone in this series (the storytelling is just so good that I don’t care), so that’s a challenge I can take!
What’s on your fall TBR? Do you like creepy books,
or go for something cozier?
