Audiobooks and Newberry Winners, Oh My! Book Haul (28)
12October 6, 2012 by Heidi
Happy weekend all! Sorry if I’ve been more or less absent from the interwebs the last few days–I like to disconnect completely when I’m kicking back. In this case at the beach! Still, it was a fairly rich couple of weeks for me in terms of book procurement, and I wanted to share my goods:
At the Newberry event I went to I budgeted for myself to buy 3 books to have signed (and was very sad I couldn’t afford to buy a book from each of the 5 present authors):
When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead [Amazon|Goodreads]
City of Orphans by Avi [Amazon|Goodreads]
The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale [Amazon|Goodreads]
I also picked up a couple of Kindle freebies that I may or may not eventually read:
Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs [Amazon|Goodreads]
Whispers in Autumn by Trisha Leigh [Amazon|Goodreads]
On top of which I picked up 5 new audiobooks! From the library:
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness [Amazon|Goodreads]
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling [Amazon|Goodreads]
That’s right! I finally got my hands on the first Harry Potter so I can commence my epic upteenth reread/relisten, not to mention I will finally experience the narrating goodness that is Nick Podehl. I also purchased:
Nice Girls Don’t Live Forever by Molly Harper [Amazon|Goodreads]
Nice Girls Don’t Bite Their Neighbors by Molly Harper [Amazon|Goodreads]
The Dangerous Animals Club by Stephen Tobolowsky [Amazon|Goodreads]
My Latest Bunburys
These last couple of weeks have been great here at Bunbury in the Stacks! I went to an amazing event, had a fantastic experience with an author whose book I did not like, and spanned age groups and genres from MG to non-fiction!
YA Audio Review: Carnival of Secrets by Melissa Marr
YA Review: Monstrous Beauty by Elizabeth Fama
Adult UF Review: Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire
Author Appreciation: You’re More Than Just a Book to Me, Elizabeth Fama
Upcoming Goodies: With Bated Breath: October New Releases
Event Recap: Newberry Winning Authors at Books of Wonder
Middle Grade Review: Pickle by Kim Baker
Non-Fic Retro Friday Audio Review: Stiff by Mary Roach

Is it horrible that the only book I’ve read out of all of these is Harry Potter? *hides face* I haven’t picked up any of Avi or Shannon Hale’s recent novels ever since I was…twelve I think, so it’s been a looong while since I read anything by those two even though I used to love them. The Knife of Never Letting Go is one I’m determined to read myself and I’ve seen Sweet Venom around SO MUCH but NEVER read a review of it! I don’t know ANYTHING about it, so I’m looking forward to seeing what you have to say. Also, can I just say how excited I am that you’re reading In a Fix? Maja found it “meh” but another friend of mine loved it, so I’ve been torn about adding it to my TBR, so I’ll decide after I see what you think!
Awesome haul this week, Heidi! 😀
Hehe, the only one of these I’ve read thus far is Harry Potter as well! So obviously nothing shameful. I’ve heard decent but not amazing things about Sweet Venom, so it’s not a priority but I was interested enough to pick it up. I’ve been meaning/needing to read The Knife of Never Letting Go FOREVER. I actually have to go with Maja on In a Fix, it was pretty meh. It didn’t work for me–but I’ve seen lots of 4 and 5 star reviews, so you may still be interested! I think that it just wasn’t offering quite what I was looking for when I picked it up. Hopefully I’ll get my review out soon!
KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO!
Is so good.
On audio and in print.
LOVE LOVE LOVE.
Yay!! I’m really so excited. Kind of scared because everyone loves this series, but I’m still pretty confident it’ll live up to the hype.
I love The Goose Girl! Hope you enjoy it and so jealous you got to meet Shannon Hale!
Yes! She was so sweet, really articulate, and just plain fun to listen to.
I love the HP audiobooks. Jim Dale is awesome. I listened to the Peter and the Starcatchers series which is also narrated by Jim Dale, and when I put the first CD in, initially I was thinking “Peter? There is no Peter in HP.” I actually had to remind myself that it was a different book.
YAY for Goose Girl. I love that book!
Isn’t Jim Dale the best? Hehe, I know what you mean about having to adjust to him reading anything else though. He is the voice of Harry Potter in my mind! It’s funny to relisten after so long though–so many of the name pronunciations are different than in the movies!
I was totally supposed to read When You Reach Me for class this coming week but I couldn’t find it anywhere sooo. Have you read Dead End in Norvelt? I’m reading that one also for class and it’s pretty interesting.
I haven’t, but I’ve seen lots of good reviews! I’m honestly not a huge contemp fan at all, so even though I have this massive list of contemp MG novels I ought to read, they always seem to get passed over. When You Read Me is appealing because it has time travel aspects.
I took Sweet Venom out at the library TWICE this summer and didn’t read it, I hope it’s awesome for you!! Also obvs to HARRY POTTER <333
Yeah we’ll see if I actually ever read it. It looks decent, but not amazing, and there’s just so many books I’d rather read first.
